Why the hatch is missing

A reset works because the service holds a second channel to you. Email, phone, a support agent who can check a card number. Each of those is a record connecting an account to a person, and each is available to anyone who ends up holding the platform data. A market that collects none of it has nothing to hand over and nothing to leak. The price of that is paid by you, once, on the day you forget something.

What the signup material actually is

Depending on the platform you get a mnemonic phrase, a PIN, or both, presented once at registration with a line telling you to write it down. People skim that screen because every other signup screen in their life was skippable. Here it is the only copy that will ever exist.

The mnemonic

A set of words that stands in for the account itself. It is not a hint and cannot be regenerated.

The PIN

A second factor used to authorise the sensitive actions rather than to log in.

Your username

Also not recoverable. People lose accounts to a forgotten spelling more often than they expect.

How losses actually happen

• Written into a note app that was wiped, or on a device that stopped working.
• Saved into a browser profile that got cleared, since the browser is built to forget.
• Photographed, then lost in a camera roll nobody can search.
• Handed to somebody impersonating support, which is a total loss rather than a recovery.
• Remembered wrongly. Two words swapped is the same as none.

Storing it so it survives

1. On paper, in your handwriting, somewhere you will still have in a year. Paper survives the failure modes that eat phones.
2. Twice, in two places. One copy is not a backup.
3. Without a label saying what it is. A phrase on a card means nothing to anyone who has not been told.
4. Never in a cloud note, a photo library or a chat with yourself. Those are all indexed and none of them are yours alone.

If it is already gone

Then it is gone, and the useful thing is to stop looking for a way around it. Anyone offering account recovery is offering a story. What is left is a new account and, if there is a balance behind the old one, an unpleasant demonstration of why a balance is not a safe place to leave anything.
